when i was changing the battery on my 3rd gen ipod i forgot to replace the protective cover that keeps the hard disk ribbon cable from shorting all the leads on the ipod connector. so i guess the 5V charging circuit was shorted out and now the battery won't charge.

there is a charging IC on the unit with model number LTC1733. the IC shows the battery voltage on pin 9 appropriately (should be 3.75V but the battery is nearly dead so it only reads 3.08V). there is no 5V power going to pin 2 on the IC. i've resoldered and repaired the leads on the ipod connector (they were a bit scorched) and i can see 5V traveling through what looks like the beginning of the charging circuit (C86, DZ3, L46 -> C83 for anyone with a 3rd gen ipod) but i don't see any 5V lines anywhere on the other side of the board.

i'm obviously a total noob and only halfway know what i'm doing. i can solder SMT hardware (got a Hakko 939 station) but i'm not so good at figuring out what's wrong (yet). if anyone can help i'd greatly appreciate it.

Not familiar with the unit and doubt if you could find any type of schematic. Based on what you have found, the key is the supply to the LTC1733 (pin 2). Obviously it won't operate without a source. At this point you may have anything from a damaged IC or may a burned trace? Either way, it must have a source. Also, pin 7 is the main controlling pin which depending on the circuit is used to program the charging; it usually need to see some sort of a resistance to ground but it can easily be interfaced to a micro-controller for custom Charge. I know that it may be uneconomical to troubleshoot an Ipod but if you'd like to learn, study the datasheet....just the type of thing that got me started in electronics way back when..
