Hi, forum newbie, hope this is the correct place to ask.

I have a Nintendo DS with a dislodged SM component that I cant resolder. Cant get the solder to wick onto the component pads. Circuit board pads are fine. I'm thinking about trying to source a replacement component, if only I knew what it was!

Its the component at L2 half way up the left hand edge of the rear of the board pictured at:

Any help would be much appreciated.

And on a forum usage note, if there is a similar topic already, should I post to that or create a new one?

thanks

Pete

In general, Lxx denotes a coil on a pc board and I am pretty sure that is what you have. Ofcourse it is next to impossible to determine it's true value without a diagram. However in this case the value is more likely not critical and you should be able to use a similar size component--have you tried using solder flux? Unless the ends (shiny part) have been torn off/damaged, you should be able to solder it back in place.

Thanks vtech,

yeah, I had thought that Lxx would denote an inductor of some sort though I thought the component with the 100 on it was the coil. I was not very clear sorry, its the small black component just above the one with 100 on it. Strangely, its looks to be labelled L2 but I guess thats referring to the component group??

And yes, I only have one one shiny end on the component so I dont think its reusable unfortunately. I think I need to read up on soldering surface mount components!

cheers

Pete

They are both coils. Difference is in the structure which will give a much higher value; the ones with 100 stamped on top appear to have a metallic core.
