Samsung DVD HR 770 "System error"

Hi. I have this DVD recorder Samsung HR 770. It will play a DVD, but it can not record at the harddisk or disk. Display shows "system error". Could it be the harddisk that is defect or can I someway try to reset the system.

If I replace the harddisk, do I then need some software to make it work?

I am not familiar with the specifics of your system but in general, if you could use another hard drive, there should be no need for any extra software. I used to do this on older Panasonic recorders where the hard drive would fail. Whether it is the same with Samsung, I am not sure.
