have a broken laptop. The only thing wrong with it is that the power connector is damaged. A big box computer store says it will cost $600-$700 to fix. I am willing to try fixing the power connector, but I am having trouble removing the old power connector. So far I have removed MOST of the original connector, but the tabs are still stuck in the board. So I was wondering if any soldering gurus could help out. I just need to figure out how to desolder the old tabs, so that I can put the new power connector in place. I have a 25w weller iron, but it doesn't melt the connection that the old tabs have to the board. How do I get the old tabs out?
the attached pic shows my problem:

Problem is the wattage of the soldering iron. 25 watts is simply not hot enough . On double-sided pc boards, heat gets quickly dissipated ---especialy if it uses the lead-less solder.

Either way you need more constant heat to keep the solder flowing long enough to be able to remove the tabs. ( at least around 700~850 degree Farenheit). I'd say at least a 40 ~ 60 watt iron.

Thanks,

I will get a hotter iron then, and try again.
