If you notice, there are so many blown and bulging caps that it would take me a long time to clean up and replace...if it had been only 1 or 2, I would have taken the chance, but considering the mess (look at all the yellow oozing)...some have oozes where there appears to be no caps..(look at the copper wired round thingies)

The yellow substance is not the ooze from capacitor(s); it is epoxy glue used to support heavier components during wave soldering process and prevents further movement . It has no bearing on capacitor failure.

I feel so dumb, yet suddenly a little smarter. Smile

So then, does a bulging capacitor mean it is not longer working?

Hmmmm, so it looks like I have only 7 capacitors with bulging caps that need replacing. My new psu is on its way (70.00 after shipping costs factored in)...

Are you saying that if I replace the 7 bulging capacitors, that this thing might work?

By "bulging" capacitor, it is meant that capacitor has already failed or (failing) due to internal shorts, age or inferior quality. The slits on top of the can is a safety feature. It is meant to relieve the pressure built inside the failing cap. So, any form of bulging metal on top of electrolytic cap is usually a sign of problem.

hmmm, i might see about the cost of returning the psu and try to replace the capacitors on my own....trying to weight it out as to cost of shipping + return shipping to supplier...then cost of capacitors plus solder and solder gun to replace the capacitors....vs the challenge of just seeing if I can do it.

So does anyone want to help me identify the 7 bulging capacitors and the recommended replacements? I really want to try and replace these.

If you have already ordered the power supply and do not have any caps or soldering equipment, you may want to stick with the new one.
While replacing bulged caps will fix the circuit in majority of the cases, it is no guarantee. But, if you want to try it, just read the values of the labels and order what you need--it is not difficult. Values are in microfarad along with working voltage. Best to go with higher temp capacitors; 105 Vs 85 degrees and observe polarity when replacing.

Well, funny thing. My replacement PSU came in today. I didnt expect it so soon but it was in my mail box. My replacement was the FSP212-SF02 with the wiring harness...which barely made it over to the main board...barely!

All works great.

I still may attempt to replace the caps for the fun of it...maybe even return the new PSU (got to find out about return policy)...

what would a soldering iron, solder, and caps run me for this job???

Well, my tv works now that I replaced the power supply.

Before I fixed it, the tv would turn on for 30 seconds and shut down...the tv would smell bad afterwards...like heavy burnt plastic or worse.

However, now when the tv is on for more than 15 minutes or so, I can really smell that bad smell...if I leave the room and return its definitely more noticable. The TV works fine.....just the smell.

What could this be?

Could this be from the previous burnt smell that is still emanating from the set when it gets hot?
