RE: Pioneer SD-P4575-K/KC Projection Widescreen TV Set
I've had this Set for literally years (15-20 at least) and it has been on almost every day in a video store setting. Never had to replace any bulbs or service any parts until just today!
The set doesn't power on at all although I can hear something that sounds like a relay inside flipping within seconds of plugging it in.
Any ideas? I'm wondering if its a system sensor preventing set use if any of a specific series of tests fail on powerup, such as a bulf sense failure.
I'm hoping there is a service tech that can make a "business call" in my area but failing that I feel willing to try some component replacements if necessary.
Thanks in advance!

Any electronic unit that is left powered all of the time heats the capacitors which dries out the electrolyte. While the heat keeps the electrolyte working to some degree, if there is a power outage for long enough time the capacitors will cool and the unit will not start.
After 20 years of operation I would say that capacitors could be some or all of your problem.
Sometimes you can hear the powersupply whine louder than usual until the unit heats up, this is a good indication that capacitors need replacing. most people will keep using it in this condition for months or maybe years until the ripple or unregulated voltage destroys other components.
If you are willing to try, replace the electrolytics in the powersupply with 105 degree quality replacements, and use low ESR replacements for the ones operating at high frequency. (maybe most of them) You will also need to check the low value and high value resistors on the line side of the switchmode and check all rectifiers, primary and secondary.
Beware of the lethal voltage that may be stored in reservoir capacitors, especially in a circuit that does not work.
Let us know how you go and what you decide:) |

|

Well just give you an update that I found an authorized Pioneer repair centre near me and gave them a call yesterday. Today 2 techs came over and gave the set a quick once over. Although I wasn't present in the store at that time my staff indicated that they gave the set a "good cleaning" with a vacuum...I can only imagine what it looked like in there! (especially from 15-20 years of flawless operation!)
I believe they removed the power supply and took it with them to the shop for testing.
I wonder how much a person should invest into this set before simply buying a new one? I guess the basic parts (caps, resisters, rectifiers etc) should be easy to find at the local electronics shop...the specialized IC's on the otherhand might be a bit of a problem although technologies from 20 years ago? Did they really have much in the line of "complex" circuits? I guess I should even see if they are using double sided circuit boards! *lol*
Anyway...I'll let you know more when I know!
Thanks for listening...and I will certainly give the Caps a good once over. Everything I keep reading about this series of set indicate bad solder joints cause most of the troubles!

My next suggestion was going to be that if the powersupply was a separate board, then maybe you could just replace it with a new one. They will either replace all the parts that go faulty (most of them) or replace the board with a new or updated one.
The Pioneer guys will have access to all of the faults that occur with that model and (if they are good) will replace everything for you.
Sometimes technology makes what you have redundant but other times making a cheaper product is the driving force. I am not sure of your model but make sure a new one is actually better than the old before you replace a working unit. Price of repairs compared with price of replacement/quality of replacement should be considered.
Good Luck:) |
