I have to fit the water hoses to this machine. They are supposed to be colour coded - but mine are not. If anyone has such a machine - can anyone tell me which way round are the hot and cold inlets on the back of the machine??

If any one can help me out - thanks !!

In the US, hot is usually on the left. In fact, that is written into current plumbing codes.

One possibility is to run the machine with the water hoses arbitrarly connected and look after which inlet is opened at which part of the program.

In many cases, a schematic diagram can be found inside the machine, glued to the back panel or folded together and put away somewhere. Maybe the inlet valves are designated as "hot" and "cold" inlet in the schematic and can be located by wiring colors etc.
