Why not get a wire wound potentiometer, say a 1K or so, put it on it's highest setting and place it 'in circuit' turn it down gradually.... the only thing is if it passes any appreciable amount of current a wire a carbon track type |

I played around with the settings in the service alignment menu(SAM), and now unfortunately My TV only shows a red flashing led 3hz.
According to the service manual the flashing led means that the TV has entered software protection mode.
